About the Position: This position is located at Brooke Army Medical Center, Department of Anesthesia and Operative Services, Perioperative Nursing, Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Fort Sam Houston, TX.

You will serve as a Registered Nurse assigned to the Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), Same Day Surgery (SDS) Unit, and Preoperative Prep and Hold Unit within the Department of Anesthesia and Operative Services (DOAOS). The clinical staff nurse possesses a highly specialized knowledge base regarding surgery, anesthesia, and related pre and postoperative nursing interventions.

  • Provide nursing care to all types of patients, undergoing all types of anesthesia (general, regional, local and/or sedation analgesia), and all age groups (neonate through geriatric).
  • Plan, develop, and implement individualized nursing care for surgical patients based on comprehensive nursing assessment, and Pre and post anesthesia care nursing principles.
  • Administer and monitor the use of therapeutic agents (medications) in accordance with Nursing Services Policies and Procedures, the American Society of Peri-Anesthesia Nurses (ASPAN) and American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) standards.
  • Assure a coordinated, timely, individualized discharge process for surgical patients.
  • Complete a comprehensive post-procedural nursing assessment which includes reviewing the history, a physical examination and psychosocial evaluation and all postoperative teaching that will assist patient in post-hospital care.

  • Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) Training and certification within six months of employment.

Basic Requirement for Nurse (Clinical):

Degree:A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education, Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.

Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.

Licensure: Applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination and possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Qualification Requirements: In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:

Education Substitution: Successful completion of two and a half years of progressively higher level graduate education leading towards a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; or

Degree and Experience:Possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program and at least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-9 grade level). Professional Nursing Experience is defined as: One year of experience which includes preparing patients for surgical procedures by administering medications, providing pre and post-operative nursing care, and performing various administrative and/or floor duties.

  • This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to applicant testing and random drug testing.
