Tenet Healthcare Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant Psych/Behavioral, Baptist Medical Center, PRN in San Antonio, Texas

Demonstrates and serves as an expert in the role of practitioner, consultant, educator, and behavioral health professional by diagnosing, conducting, and prescribing medications for patients having psychiatric and substance use disorders in the Baptist Behavioral Health System. Provides emergency psychiatric services, physical and psychosocial examination, developing appropriate treatment plan and providing effective management of patient care with proper evaluation. Functions as educator and consultant to staff, families, groups, legislators, communities, and corporations, as well as participate in developing policies and healthcare reforms, improving service quality, and practice evaluation. Assures competent and ethical care of patients and families. Shares with the supervising physician and Baptist Behavioral Health staff the responsibilities of providing and maintaining a quality, customer-focused, nursing and medically appropriate approach to patient care. Community involvement and collaboration is encouraged. Completes established competencies for the position within designated introductory period. Other related duties as assigned.

MINIMUM EDUCATION: Master’s Degree in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing from an accredited university. Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program

PREFERRED EDUCATION: Doctorate Degree in Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing from accredited university. Clinical Nurse Specialist

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE: 2 years experience working with persons who have serious mental illness, mental retardation, and/or substance use disorders or a combination of licensure, education and experience demonstrating ability to effectively perform essential job functions. Knowledge of the Texas Nurse Practice Act, the Rules and Regulations of the Texas Board of Nursing, Code of Ethics for Nurses and the Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Practice and Professional Performance and for Advanced Practice Nursing.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE: 5 to 7 years Professional Nursing Experience, with a combination in behavioral health and family practice.


  1. Possession of current Texas State License for Registered Nurse.

  2. Current Registered Nurse with Advanced Practice status and prescriptive authority.

  3. Certification as an Advanced Practice Nurse Prescriber (APNP) by the Texas State Board of Nursing

  4. Prescriber Number assigned by the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA)

  5. Prescriber Number assigned by the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS)

  6. Psychiatric Mental health Nurse Practitioner Certification (PMHNP)

PREFERRED CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURE: Certification: Clinical Nurse Specialist: Adult Health, Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, Family Nurse Practioner, Adult Nurse Practitioner. Sub Speciality: Certified Occupational Health Nurse-Specialist (COHN-S)

REQUIRED COURSES/ COMPLETIONS (e.g., CPR): BLS-Obtained through approved American Heart Association Training Center or the Military Training Network, ACLS
