Position Summary:

Provides advanced nursing care to patients in a comprehensive practice setting under the

direction of a collaborating physician. This NP may make house calls, follow

patient load through hospital and/or clinic episodes, or monitor in-patients in

specialized settings other than surgical or acute care.

CARE Center Summary:

The CARE Center provides medical,

mental health, and social work services to child maltreatment victims and to

children and their caregivers who are thought to be at risk of maltreatment. In

addition to subspecialty child abuse services, the Center also provides

comprehensive general pediatric care. Following a period of training with child

abuse pediatricians, this CARE Center nurse practitioner will provide forensic

and general pediatric care to children in inpatient and outpatient settings.

Position Key Accountabilities:

  1. Performs relevant patient assessments and physical examinations, including specialized evaluations of children who have special healthcare needs, children who are thought to be at risk of maltreatment, and children who have suffered physical abuse, sexual abuse, medical abuse, and/or neglect.

  2. Coordinates, directs, and implements patient’s plan of care.

  3. May make house calls, follow patient load through hospital and/or clinic episodes, or monitor in-patients in specialized settings other than surgical or acute care.

  4. Orders, conducts, and interprets pertinent laboratory and diagnostic studies and procedures.

  5. Makes medical recommendations and/or referrals.

  6. Formulates, implements, and evaluates an outcome-based treatment plan.

  7. Maintains timely and complete medical records detailing the patient’s pertinent history, physical findings, diagnosis and treatment plans.

  8. Performs detailed pictorial and photographic documentation of physical findings when indicated.

  9. Provides patient education relating to medical processes, medication, nutrition, health promotion, and injury prevention.

  10. Shares telephone and weekend call with other CARE Center providers.

  11. collaborates with other professional providers and referral services.

  12. Participates in regularly scheduled multidisciplinary team meetings.

  13. Provides court testimony when required by civil or criminal courts.

  14. Helps identify issues that would benefit from quality improvement initiatives, and participates in quality improvement activities.

  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Certification/Skills:

  • Current Texas Licensure as a Registered Nurse

  • Current Texas Licensure as an APRN-NP, and specialty certification as required by department

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) Certified or specialty certification as required by department

Minimum Education:

  • Masters in Nursing as NP or Masters in Nursing with completion of a post masters Nurse Practitioner Certification Program.

Physical Requirements:
